Schools Closed, Buses Cancelled as Massive Snowstorm Hits the GTHA (2026)

Massive Snowstorm Disrupts Transportation and Education in the GTHA

The Greater Toronto Area (GTHA) is bracing for a significant winter storm, prompting a series of critical decisions to ensure public safety and operational continuity. Schools and public transportation services have been canceled as the region prepares for the expected heavy snowfall.

The Toronto District School Board (TDSB) announced early on Sunday evening that all schools, sites, and administrative buildings, including Child Care centers, would be closed to students and most staff. This decision was made in response to Environment Canada's forecast, predicting 60 centimeters or more of snow in certain areas of the region.

Exams scheduled for Monday have been postponed to another day this week, and impacted students and families will receive further details directly from the schools. The Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) followed suit, closing all schools and board sites on Monday and canceling bus transportation, childcare, before- and after-school programs, and permits.

Exams originally set for Monday will now take place on January 29th, while exams on January 27th and 28th will proceed as planned. The York Region District School Board and the Durham District School Board have also closed all schools and board locations, with the latter also canceling bus services.

In the York Region, secondary students with exams on Monday will have them rescheduled to Thursday, while Tuesday and Wednesday's exams will proceed as originally scheduled. The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board and the Peel District School Board have also closed all schools and offices, canceling all activities, including childcare, night school, and permits.

The Halton District School Board and the Halton Catholic District School Board (HCDSB) have closed all schools and administrative centers, canceling transportation services in Zones 1, 2, and 3 for January 26, 2026. The HCDSB emphasized the decision's focus on student, family, and staff safety, citing the significant snowfall and deteriorating road conditions.

This coordinated response aims to mitigate the potential risks associated with the severe weather conditions, ensuring the well-being of the community while maintaining essential services.
