A wave of pork pie enthusiasts has voiced their disappointment over a perceived decline in quality, despite the manufacturer's insistence that the recipe remains unchanged. Hundreds of fans have taken to social media to express their concerns, with many claiming that their beloved treat has lost its former glory.
Mike Dowd, a 65-year-old resident of Breadsall, shared his experience on the Pork Pie Appreciation Society's Facebook page. He described a recent purchase from the Chaddesden branch of Birds Bakery as significantly inferior to previous versions. Dowd's post sparked a heated discussion, with over 400 comments echoing his sentiments.
Birds Bakery, a family-owned business with a rich history dating back to 1919, has been a staple in the Midlands for over a century. The fourth-generation family member, Jamie Bird, acknowledged the online feedback and expressed gratitude for the passionate critics' input.
Bird's response highlighted the company's commitment to maintaining the original recipe, emphasizing their pride in the consistent quality of their pork pies since the opening of their first bakery. However, Dowd and others remain convinced that there has been a change, citing noticeable differences in taste, texture, and color.
Dowd's observations include a thicker pastry, a lack of jelly, and a bright pink pork color, contrasting with the traditional grey hue. He expressed his disappointment, recalling his fondness for the company from his youth, when he worked at the Birds warehouse in 1976.
The online backlash has sparked a broader conversation, with many customers sharing similar experiences. Tim Brown, a 55-year-old fan, noted a loss of the traditional peppery flavor in recent pies. Despite the controversy, Birds Bakery continues to maintain its reputation as a beloved local business, encouraging customers to support them despite the recent debates.
As the discussion continues, Birds Bakery remains committed to addressing customer concerns and ensuring the satisfaction of their loyal followers.
