Manchester Boxing Legend's Grandson Runs Marathon to Save Family Gym | Roy Richardson's Legacy (2026)

A heartwarming story of legacy and community spirit is unfolding in Manchester, where a professional boxer is taking on a challenging marathon to support a beloved boxing gym. The grandson of a legendary boxer is stepping into his grandad's shoes, quite literally, to raise funds for a cause close to his heart.

Dale Arrowsmith, a 31-year-old professional fighter, is set to participate in the Manchester Marathon this April. He aims to honor his grandfather, Roy Richardson, a boxing legend and the namesake of the Roy Richardson Academy in Stockport. The gym, a non-profit organization, relies on the dedication of volunteers to train members aged 11 to 40, but it's facing financial challenges with rising costs.

Dale shares, "We do it for the love of helping the kids. We survive on their contributions and fundraising." He explains the difficulty of keeping the gym afloat, with equipment costs skyrocketing. This inspired him to follow in his grandad's footsteps, as Roy ran the Manchester Marathon in the 1980s at the age of 50.

Roy's journey began in the 1950s, fighting for money in carnival boxing booths in Longford Park, Chorlton. He joined the Royal Engineers at 21 and later married Pat, moving to New Zealand, where he trained young fighters. Upon returning to the UK, he trained at the Bredbury Steelworks gym in Stockport, which was renamed the Roy Richardson Boxing Academy in 2018.

Sadly, Roy passed away in 2021 at the age of 88, leaving Dale in charge of the operations. Dale's marathon run is a testament to his grandad's legacy and a way to keep the boxing academy thriving. But here's where it gets controversial: should the legacy of a boxing legend be carried forward through a marathon, a sport often seen as contrasting with the boxing world?

What are your thoughts on this unique fundraising initiative? Do you think it's a fitting tribute to Roy Richardson's memory? Feel free to share your opinions in the comments below!
