SCOOP: Anil Kapoor has reportedly purchased the rights to Nayak from producer Deepak Mukut, the mastermind behind Sanam Teri Kasam (2016). A source close to the development revealed, ‘Anil Kapoor holds this film very close to his heart and is keen on bringing its story forward. He’s well aware of the love Nayak has received over the years and believes its themes have immense potential for a sequel.’
When Bollywood Hungama reached out to Deepak Mukut for confirmation, he was unavailable for comment. However, in a March 2024 interview, Mukut shared insights into his acquisition of the rights. ‘I obtained the rights from Nayak’s original producer, Mr. A.S. Rathnam, along with the negative rights to other films like Tejasvini (1994) and Dil Hi Dil Mein (1999),’ he explained. ‘This happened about a decade ago.’
For those who missed the magic of Nayak, the film—written and directed by Shankar—tells the story of a fearless journalist who becomes the Chief Minister of Maharashtra for a day. The transformative changes he brings about in just 24 hours turn him into a national hero. Starring alongside Anil Kapoor were Rani Mukerji, the late Amrish Puri, Paresh Rawal, Saurabh Shukla, Johny Lever, Shivaji Satam, and Neena Kulkarni. Pooja Batra made a cameo appearance, and Sushmita Sen added glamour with a song sequence.
